Joseph Smith

October 10, 1918 - July 17, 1994

Joseph Smith, Ltd., the largest personal injury firm on the peninsula and one of the largest in Virginia, has been serving injured persons for nearly half a century. Our firm was founded by Joseph Smith in 1949 with the express purpose of providing quality legal representation to the victims of the negligence of others. We pride ourselves on continuing the fine tradition that Joseph Smith began by aggressively representing our clients and protecting their rights.

Joseph Smith (1918-1994) a native of Newport News, founded Joseph Smith, Ltd. upon his graduation from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law of the College of William and Mary. He was a president of the William and Mary Interfraternity Council and of Phi Alpha fraternity, later becoming a member of the President's Council. Mr. Smith was recognized by his colleagues for being a diligent and tenacious attorney who also had a keen sense of humor.

Mr. Smith's success in the practice of law allowed him to be a philanthropist and he supported many local and national charities. His style was to make his contributions quietly, preferring to help the less fortunate without letting them know the identity of their benefactor. Mr. Smith also endowed the Ernest Goodrich Professorship Fund at Marshall-Wythe School of Law. He was a Mason, a member of the Peninsula Shrine Club, and a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks.

His legacy of long hours, hard work, honesty and integrity is reflected in each and every member of the Joseph Smith, Ltd. team.
